West Catholic Interact
By Nick Squeri
It was exciting to hear that the school year was off to a great start with West Catholic Interact students volunteering recently at Little Sisters of the Poor Holy Family Home to play Bingo and cards with the residents. In addition, the Interact Club will soon be running a drive for homeless outreach.
The Interactors are also looking into doing a snack bag event with Caring for Friends and hoping to use the funds provided by the Philadelphia Rotary to make this happen. And the club will soon be choosing its 2024-2025 President and Vice President.
Bravo!
Sharing Flags, Strengthening International Bonds
In a heartfelt ceremony at the Marriott Hotel Philadelphia, Lal Goel, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Organ Donation International (RCODI), and Carrie Sharpshair, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia, exchanged Club Flags. The Flag Exchange Ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the enduring friendships and shared goals that unite Rotary Clubs across the globe.
During their meeting, Lal and Carrie discussed their respective clubs’ missions and initiatives, and Carrie shared a personal connection to organ donation, revealing that her sister had undergone a life-saving kidney transplant 20 years ago. Deeply moved by RCODI's efforts, she expressed strong interest in their Organ Donation Awareness Program and committed to supporting the cause.
As a gesture of goodwill, Lal Goel invited Carrie to visit India, an offer she graciously – and quickly! - accepted.
We Brightened the Philadelphia Skyline
The Rotary Club of Philadelphia was recently spotlighted for three days above the City of Philadelphia atop the PECO Building. As you know, you cannot drive on the Schuylkill Expressway or around the city at night without seeing the PECO Crown Lights “motion messages.”
Our message - Rotary Club of Philadelphia: 100+ years of outreach to those in need! – scrolled many times for thousands of motorists, commuters, and pedestrians to see. We were only allowed 72 characters, but our positive message shone brightly!

Koi and Juan have been key players in the Liguori Interact’s very successful array of service activities this year. They were also both special guests at a past Philadelphia Rotary meeting, along with Liguori’s outstanding faculty moderator, Mary Theresa Killion (photo right).
March Madness Bracket Challenge WINNER
Congratulations to the winner of our 2024 Philadelphia Rotary Club NCAA March Madness Bracket Challenge, Nick Squeri for finishing with 125 points, edging out 2nd place finisher John Schueler by just 4 points.
More congratulation to all fans and alumni of the University of Connecticut for securing its second consecutive NCAA championship! It was an exciting tournament and their victory was well deserved.
Thank you to all who participated in our tournament. Because of your support, we were able to raise close to $1,000 for our club, half of which will go to our winner, Nick. Don't spend it all in one place!
Liguori Academy Supports Caring for Friends
The Liguori Academy Interact Club recently received a grant from Philly Service Project that was used to purchase supplies for snack bags for the homeless and those in need.
Members of the Interact Club assembled almost 100 bags and included a card with well-wishes in each bag.
Once completed, the bags were brought to Caring for Friends, an organization that distributes food to the homeless and hungry in greater Philadelphia.
West Catholic Prep Lasallian Interact Reaches Out
West Catholic Prep Lasallian Interact was back outside in the beautiful weather last week supporting the homeless at Philly’s Logan Circle.
Sophomore and junior Interact students made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and brought them to those in need, along with much-needed socks. These Interactors finally enjoyed some sun and warmth after some cold, damp days distributing food this winter.
The West Catholic Interact students have been going out on a regular basis with this caring outreach!

Liguori Link Event
Earlier this week, three members of our Philadelphia Rotary (President Ken Myers, James Comfort, and Lisa Leonard) attended a Liguori Link networking event for supporters of the high school.
They enjoyed beautiful rooftop views while engaging in meaningful conversations and expanding networks within the Liguori Academy community.
If You Missed Thursday's Meeting...
March 7, 2024
Thursday's Rotary Club meeting was well attended and filled with fellowship, featuring a dynamic agenda! President Ken Myers commenced the session with the Four-Way Test and offered updates on Joan Batory's health. Let's keep Joan in our thoughts and prayers.
A warm welcome to our newest member, Kwame Tyndale, who has consistently demonstrated his commitment to service through active participation in meetings and service projects. Club President Ken Myers (left) conducted the formal installation ceremony assisted by Club Foundation Chair Sean Friedland (right). Welcome to the club, Kwame!
Our guest speaker, Romona Riscoe Benson, Director of Corporate and Community Impact at PECO, shared insightful perspectives on the alignment of PECO's values with those of Rotary International. She emphasized PECO's role in public service, highlighting corporate social responsibility initiatives and sustainability efforts.
Romona's presentation showcased PECO's commitment to environmental stewardship, including the donation of tree clippings to the Philadelphia and Elmwood Park Zoos. Members engaged with Romona, sparking thoughtful discussions and enthusiasm for potential collaboration between PECO and the Rotary Club of Philadelphia. Let's explore opportunities for meaningful community partnerships together!
Additionally, there was a lively and interactive performance by Karen Smith Drums, a New York Native and Philadelphia Transplant. Karen is a percussionist, playwright, director, producer, and poet. She is also the founder and leader of two musical collectives: The Karen Smith Experience and Sistahs Laying Down Hands (SLDH). A big thank you to Nick Squeri for organizing this. These two artists not only performed superbly but also engaged the Rotary audience as accompanying vocalists and instrumentalists. It was a great way to close out a terrific meeting!
A Powerful Visit from West Catholic Prep
By Joseph Batory
West Catholic Prep junior Raymond Gough delivered a powerful speech at the Philadelphia Rotary meeting on March 7.
Raymond was one of two students financed by our club to attend the recent Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) weekend in Valley Forge. He praised the array of RYLA activities and said they were thought-provoking, challenging, and fun. More than 70 student leaders from 20+ area high schools attended this RYLA event sponsored by Rotary District 7450.
An outstanding student at West Catholic, Raymond has been invited to Harvard University for a special session this summer and also to Germany for a seminar on engineering.
Raymond thanked Philadelphia Rotary for its ongoing support of the West Catholic Lasallian Interact Club and for providing a scholarship for a West grad in June 2023.
In the group photo, that’s Raymond (2nd from left), his dad Ray (left), his mom Krystal (2nd from right) and West Catholic faculty member Kelly Foley (right).
US Air Force Visits Liguori Academy
Philadelphia Rotary Member Michael Snell, who is also a United States Air Force pilot, wowed the 11th grade workforce class at Liguori Academy with his recent career presentation. The student reviews were excellent and summarized Michael’s visit as enlightening and eye-opening. Thanks Michael!
Liguori Interact Students Give Back
The Liguori Academy Interact Club recently joined the Salvation Army to complete a multipart service project. They distributed fresh produce and meals to those in need, assembled snack bags for the homeless, and helped organize inventory for the Salvation Army food pantry.
More Good Reviews
By Joseph Batory
Elizabeth Cieri and Christopher Crawford were our Philadelphia Rotary career presenters at Liguori Academy during the week of February 12. And the student reviews of these two presentations were “first-rate.” What our many club members continue to bring to this school in terms of workplace expertise and motivation and inspiration adds up to remarkable service outreach to youth!
Two More Home Runs
Philadelphia Rotary member Oscar Armas-Luy was a big hit with his Liguori Academy career presentation last Monday. Many students commented on the practicality of Oscar’s sales tips and also loved the opportunities to interact with Oscar.
Ryan Scarborough, another of our Philadelphia Rotary members, also did really well at Liguori. He opened up the student minds to a world of finance, banking. and mortgages - and apparently did it so that it was understandable and meaningful to his youthful audience.
We're almost at the end of this service project for youth at Liguori Academy. Two giant thumbs up for Oscar and Ryan, and congratulations to the many Rotary members whose guest teacher appearances have been exemplary!
Liguori Career Talks Make an Impact
By Joseph Batory
Can you imagine a school experience for Philly students where they're exposed to presentations from individuals who have had success in their chosen careers? How valuable would it be for these Liguori pupils to be able to interact with these visitors? What about if they also heard anecdotes of motivation and inspiration, skillfully shared by their adult guests?
Well, Rotary Club of Philadelphia volunteers have been doing these exact, very impactful career presentations. What these Philadelphia Rotarians have brought to the school in terms of expertise and advice adds up to remarkable service outreach to youth.
As a result of these events, students have been or will be able to interact with:
high-level city and university police leaders
digital technology expert
attorney for MLB player contracts
voiceover specialist
US Air Force pilot
owner of an entertainment/hospitality company
national security expert
educators
financial service experts
construction company owner
nonprofit leaders
software engineer
paint company owner
professional photographer
management consultant
Philadelphia Rotary members who stepped up to date have received a host of positive responses from students. A full slate of February presentations is currently underway, coordinated by Liguori Academy coordinator Mary Theresa Killion and Philadelphia Rotary member Joe Batory.
Rotary Club of Philadelphia continues to engage its members in a myriad of very meaningful service projects and these interactive presentations stand out as exemplary!

Liguori Interact Letters for Change Project
The most recent Liguori Academy Interact Club project engaged the student members in writing letters to inmates in prison through an organization called Letters for Change. These letters promote friendship, understanding, and community for the inmates, many of whom receive little to no outside interaction. This student correspondence provides prisoners with moments of joy and hope.
Honoring Major Donors
The beautiful crystal piece (shown above) was recently received by members Joan and Joe Batory in recognition of their long-standing and very significant financial support of the Rotary International Foundation.
The Rotary International Foundation transforms monetary gifts from worldwide members and others into humanitarian projects that positively change lives both close to home and around the world. Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.
West Catholic Students at RYLA
By Joseph Batory
Our Philadelphia Rotary was proud to sponsor/finance the attendance of two West Catholic Prep students at last weekend’s Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) event: Rush Speller and Raymond Gough.
The RYLA experience involves building communication skills, problem-solving, analysis and critical thinking, teamwork, and increasing self-confidence. Another really bright spot of the event was the opportunity for our two West Catholic attendees to interact with more than 70 other students from numerous area high schools.
Both of these students thought this experience was really worthwhile and Rotary District 7450 organizers described our two attendees as “wonderful young men.”
Grant Awarded to Help Youths in Lebanon
At Thursday's meeting (Feb 1, 2024), Zeina Moukaddam spoke to us from Lebanon, detailing her work to empower students to become productive members of society rather than fall for the manipulative tactics of extremist groups.
Following her presentation, President-Elect Colin McMorrow announced that the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia would assist her in continuing her efforts. The Foundation approved a grant of $4,000 to Moukaddam's organization, Aflatoun x Ajialouna, which seeks to provide children and their parents with valuable educational instruction that fosters a sense of hope within them.
Orientation a Hit with New Members
Prior to our formal club meeting this past Thursday, President Ken Myers and Vice President Carrie Sharpshair held a new member orientation get-together. Twelve (12) recently inducted members attended and were treated to refreshments, a fun icebreaker, and great content and engagement. Everyone had a fantastic time and agreed they felt much more connected to the club afterwards. Interested in joining the next get-together? Let Ken or Carrie know, and they’ll make sure you to contact you.

House of Hope Shares Thanks
The Rotary Club of Philadelphia recently donated 33 coats to the Winter Giving Event at the House of Hope. Everyone who brought coats to the December meeting made a big impact!
Ertz Family Foundation Executive Director Lisa Ertz shared her deepest gratitude for the role that our Rotary Club played:
"Thanks to the efforts of Ken Myers and the Rotary Club, we were able to garner attention and support for one of our foundation's favorite initiatives. Your contribution played a pivotal role in the success of this event, and we are truly grateful.
"We are especially proud to highlight the impact of the Rotary Club's coat donation. Your generosity significantly increased our inventory, allowing us to give back even more to the Philadelphia community. With the donation of 33 coats, we expanded our capacity to provide warmth and comfort during the winter season. In total, we distributed 500 plus coats, hats & gloves, and toys to families in need.
"Thank you for your commitment to making a positive difference in our community. We are honored to have partners like Ken Myers and the Rotary Club, and we look forward to the possibility of future collaborations that will continue to uplift and support those who need it most."

Member's Personal Reason to Raise for Rotary
Long-time volunteer and recently inducted member, Nick Squeri (pictured, left) is making use of the Rotary Foundation's new crowdfunding platform. Read on to learn why Nick has started a Raise for Rotary campaign, and if you're inspired to donate, click HERE.
One often starts the day and then off to do one's part. We are overwhelmed. But then every so often something meaningful grabs our attention. We pause. We care.
I, Nick Squeri, as a member, am energized by the ever-present and genuine compassion that flows through this club. There are so many awesome opportunities to continue to carryout hope. One, out of many situations, keeps surfacing in my mind, and that is of a friend I have had virtual contact with and how he has been displaced several times over.
Khaled, from Yemen, was forced to move away from his family. Then healthcare and other needs were almost impossible needs to meet. Time went on and he luckily became reunited with his family, but the Civil War caused yet another hardship. In short, Khaled is now living on UN sanctioned land in Egypt.
Rotary International funds fight endlessly for various causes that are fragments of global needs. But the fight continues as needs will continue to be identified and addressed. Khaled's story is one that is unfortunately similar to that of many. Yet in choosing to donate and choosing to find ways to bring about Peace, we continue to that journey to be even a glimmer of light where dark should be scarce.
I know that magic can come in different forms. Being that magic is love. Please, let's continue to remember our international friends step by step. Thank you.
Liguori's Interact Club Shares Notes of Encouragement
Liguori's Interact Club members recently did a service project where they created cards of encouragement for guests of Philly House. As the second oldest homeless mission in the country, the Philly House takes care of some 240 men in crisis each night.
High school students in the Interact Club sent handwritten messages of love, encouragement, and hope for these men. The Philly House staff loved receiving them and said, "we will include them in gift bags for our guests, to give them an extra glimmer of hope in a season that is challenging in so many ways for those we serve."
"Thank you, so, so much for continuing to engage in this caring to support our guests!" - Philly House
Recap of Club Assembly
In the spirit of reflection and anticipation, Thursday's Club Assembly/State of the Union on January 4th set the tone for an engaging and purposeful year ahead. President Ken delved into the achievements of 2023, paving the way for an inspiring look at what lies ahead in 2024, centered around the new mission statement of being the preeminent service organization in the city.
Committee Chairs took the podium, providing members and guests with comprehensive updates on ongoing activities and unveiling exciting plans for the upcoming year. All Committee Chairs encouraged the membership to actively engage and contribute to the various initiatives, fostering a sense of unity and shared commitment.
The meeting concluded as Carrie Sharpshair and Gary Kao guided interactive table discussions. Members and guests collaborated, deliberating on Rotary International's seven Areas of Focus and the corresponding organizations they wish to see the Rotary Club of Philadelphia partner with and support in the upcoming year.
As we embark on this new year, members are encouraged to reach out, get involved, and be the driving force behind positive change. The Rotary Club of Philadelphia looks forward to a year of purpose, collaboration, and community service, building on the foundations laid during this impactful Club Assembly/State of the Union.
Mandela Fellow Returns with Update
by Joseph Batory
The Magic of Rotary Connections Worldwide!
Dr. Nguundja M.D. Uamburu was a very distinguished visiting guest at our meeting on Thursday, January 4. A Rotary member in her home country, she is the National Chief Dentist at the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Namibia, Africa.
Dr. Nguungja’s initial visit to the Rotary Club of Philadelphia was as a prestigious Mandela scholar in 2019. At that meeting, she developed a professional relationship with Professor Camille Ragin of the Fox Chase Cancer Center for in-depth cancer research. This multi-national project is still ongoing today with Dr. Nguundja and Professor Ragin as key members and involves teams in three African countries, five Caribbean Islands, and three USA sites.
Career Presentations Continuing
Our club members have stepped up one more time.
We now have a full slate of “career/inspiration” presenters for February at Liguori Academy. And we are initiating an unprecedented pilot program at West Catholic Prep which we are hoping will develop into a full-scale program there.
So many of our Philadelphia Rotary members have excelled with their onsite visits to Liguori Academy. During the past two years, there have been more than 50 of these very presentations delivered by individual Philadelphia Rotarians.
What is remarkable is that that despite so many different careers and personalities among our Philadelphia Rotary, speakers, each and every presenter has received rave reviews from the students.
In summary, this has been and continues to be an extraordinary Philadelphia Rotary service project that is effectively touching young lives.
TV Segment Features Rotary
President Ken Myers spoke about Rotary on live TV last week! CBS3 reporter Natasha Brown interviewed him about Rotary's volunteer efforts with The Salvation Army. Ken thanked the Rotary members and acknowledged how they took time away from their busy schedules in order to be of service. Thanks to Philadelphia Rotarian Christopher Crawford for setting up the interview. He works in Community Relations at The Salvation Army. You can watch the interview segment here or on our club's YouTube channel.
Scholar Joins Rotary
It’s official! Rotary International Global Grant Scholar Samuele Canas is now a Rotarian. Rotary International, through our Rotary International Foundation, funded Sam’s pancreatic cancer research at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) during this past year.
Sam has attended many of our meetings and was so impressed that he decided to become a Rotary member. Sam has joined an international e-Club that meets online. It is based in District 2771 in Italy. Club President Lucia flew in from Montreal to induct Sam on Sunday, December 2nd.
Sam is interviewing at the major medical centers in America to pursue his residency here. His supervisors at HUP have applauded his research and are hoping that Sam will remain in Philadelphia, as do we.
Koi Presents at Pyramid Club
Liguori Academy Interact President Koi Rose delivered a short but eloquent speech at the most recent Philadelphia Rotary meeting.
Koi cited three recent service projects of her Interact Club---creating “caring cards” for homeless clients at a Philadelphia shelter; packing and helping to distribute food for the needy at the Salvation Army headquarters; and, making dog and cat treats and toys for animals in the ACCT Philadelphia animal shelter.
Koi also thanked the Rotary Club for its support of Liguori Interact and especially praised the many Rotary members who gave career presentations to Liguori students in the past semester.
Club Member Gifts Books to Students
Philadelphia Rotary's speaker series at Liguori Academy continues to make a positive impact on students there. Check out some of the thank you notes the young people wrote after Rotarian Roscoe Brown visited then gifted them Dale Carnegie's book:
I want to thank you for teaching us about jobs and what's important in life. I've learned that you should do a job that you want to do since you are going to be doing that job for 8-10 hours a day. Lastly, I really appreciate the tips you gave us because If I didn't know I had to keep my credit score up my future would be hard. -Tyree B.
I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude for taking the time to visit our school and share your invaluable career advice with us. Your passion and genuine commitment to helping students navigate their career paths left a lasting impression on me. Your words have sparked a renewed sense of enthusiasm and determination in me as I contemplate my own future. Thank you once again for your time, wisdom, and the positive impact you've had on all of us. -Reilly M.
Thank you, Mr. Roscoe, for your time! I enjoyed your time here at Liguori Academy and found your speech to really help me think about what I'd like to do. I have been struggling with figuring out what I'd like to do and definitely will be using your speech in the future as a reference even though people might put me down about what I want to do. -Briah T.
Liguori Interact In Action
Liguori Academy’s Interact Club worked at the Salvation Army’s Distribution Center on Wednesday, November 11th.
The students packaged meals and fresh produce for community members, and then completed a cleanup of the area around the distribution center.
Two More First-Rate Presentations
Philadelphia Rotary members, James Comfort (left) and Nick Hubner (right), combined their career presentations with great success at Liguori Academy on Tuesday, November 7th, and the student reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.
James and Nick obviously did a great job in opening these student minds to the real world of work, possible careers, and life ahead. And the students loved them!
More Philadelphia Rotary volunteer presenters will be solicited in January to do career presentations at Liguori in February and March.
Club President Spoke at Global Game Changers

Club Foundation Awards New Grants
Rotary Club of Philadelphia Foundation Allocates $45,000 in Grants for 2023-24 Rotary Year Philadelphia, PA - [10/20/2023]
The Rotary Club of Philadelphia Foundation recently convened its quarterly meeting, marking a significant moment in the organization's ongoing philanthropic efforts. During this session, the Foundation's Financial Advisor presented a comprehensive report on the current state of the financial markets, offering valuable insights into short-term and long-term strategies to enhance returns and social impact.
For years, the Foundation has steadfastly allocated approximately 5% of its investment holdings, translating to an annual disbursement ranging from $30,000 to $35,000. However, during the meeting, the board engaged in a productive discussion and, subsequently, voted to allocate an increased sum of $45,000 for the upcoming Rotary Year 2023-24.
One of the highlights of the gathering was the review and distribution of grants to deserving organizations that align with the Rotary Club's mission to serve the community. Click "Read More" to learn about the organizations which were selected to receive financial support.
Akira Kaji Memorial Scholarship - $5,000
The recipient of this grant will be chosen through the collaboration of the Foundation Board and the Club's Youth Service Chair. The Akira Kaji Memorial Scholarship stands as a testament to the Rotary Club's commitment to supporting educational endeavors within the community and our memorializing Akira a dear friend and dedicated Rotarian.
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children Thanksgiving Turkey Drive - $2,000
Rotarians eager to contribute to this noble cause will soon receive information on how they can actively participate in the distribution process. This grant is intended to bolster the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive organized by St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.
Kiths Integrated and Targeted Human Services - $1,500
Kiths Integrated and Targeted Human Services (KITHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving Cambodian and other Southeast Asian immigrants in the Olney-Logan neighborhoods of Philadelphia. The Rotary Foundation is proud to support KITHS Kitchen, a fully stocked emergency food pantry that provides culturally affirming and nutritious foods. These provisions are reflective of the typical diet of Cambodian refugees and Southeast Asians, including items like canned baby corn, rice, and seafood-based staples reminiscent of their native cuisines, such as fish sauce, oyster sauce, and canned mudfish. The Foundation's grant underscores the importance of culturally relevant food assistance, distinct from the typical offerings distributed by the City of Philadelphia, such as milk, cheese, and processed meats.
These grant allocations serve as a testament to the Rotary Club of Philadelphia Foundation's unwavering commitment to creating a positive impact on the community and fostering lasting change. The Foundation's dedication to philanthropy and community service remains at the core of its mission, as exemplified by the recent allocation of funds and the support extended to these worthy organizations.

Michael Raises a Pint for Polio
Wearing another cool and customized Rotary shirt made in Togo, West Africa, Michael Curcio was a guest bartender at the Pints for Polio Happy Hour on Wednesday. He tended bar and donated all his tips to the End Polio Now campaign.
Once again, Locust Lane Brewery in Malvern was the site of the District 7450 fundraiser. Career Talks Start with Home Run
Former Rotary Peace Fellow LaMonte Adams was our first speaker of this semester to 10th graders at Liguori Academy on Tuesday, October 10th. And he received unanimous “rave reviews” from the students he addressed.
Lamonte, a retired and decorated Philadelphia police officer and currently one of the leaders of the Drexel University police, elaborated on his careers, explaining how he got there and what was involved. But he also provided a myriad of practical ideas and insights on how these young people could avoid violence and deescalate dangerous situations in their daily lives.
Six more individual presentations by our members at Liguori will occur in the weeks ahead.
And, in late November, we will begin an unprecedented pilot program of “career presentations” at West Catholic Prep.
Many thanks to the members who have stepped up to fill all of our scheduled dates at these two schools in the months ahead.
More Philadelphia Rotary volunteers will be needed to do another 15-20 onsite visits at these two schools beginning in late February or early March, offering career advice, as well as inspiration and motivation to students.
New Honorary Member
LaMonte Adams, one of our four sponsored Rotary International Peace Fellows, received an honorary membership in the Rotary Club of Philadelphia at the September 7th meeting.
LaMonte, a distinguished retired Philadelphia police officer and currently one of the leaders of the Drexel University Police Force, won his Rotary International Peace fellowship in 2014 and went on to Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand for three months . The focus of LaMonte's studies with a world class cohort was on violence prevention, peace building, mediation and compromise.
Rotary's Support of Ukraine Recognized at Festival
Philadelphia Rotary Club was well-represented at the Ukrainian American festival held at the Ukrainian American Sports Center in Horsham on Sunday, August 27th. Attendees included Joan Batory, Joe Batory, Geni Klein, Marianna Tretiak and Rotary volunteer Nick Squieri.
Joan Batory accepted recognition from many hundreds of attendees on behalf of District 7450 and past and current members of our District Ukrainian Relief Committee that raised over $100,000 during a very successful fundraising campaign they conducted in Spring 2022. That money was distributed among five Rotary Clubs in Poland and Ukraine for humanitarian purposes as directed by the chair of District 2331 Poland, DGE Piotr Jankowski.
The current committee has raised nearly $20,000 this year through contributions from four Rotary Clubs (Swarthmore, Lower Main Line, Chestnut Hill, and Philadelphia) and Gundaker Foundation and District matching grants. The North Philadelphia Cheltenham Rockledge Rotary raised more than $2000 through member contributions and a District matching grant to aid children whose soldier parent has been killed in battle. In addition, Bensalem Rotary also raised $2200 for Ukraine.
Our Philadelphia Rotary Club Foundation is contributing $2000 in grants plus $2000 from a District matching grant to the current humanitarian project.
The committee plans to send money collected to date to the Wolsztyn Rotary Club in Poland for them to buy medical supplies to deliver to the Ternipol University Medical Hospital in Ukraine. The hospital will use the supplies to treat injured victims of the continuing illegal Russian invasion of a sovereign nation intended to destroy its culture and identity.
Nice Upgrades at Pyramid Club
We are enhancing our in-meeting experience at the Pyramid Club. From now on, you'll see expanded food choices, a streamlined bar service, and a seating arrangement that's sure to promote connection and conversation! A quick note about the bar service - drink tickets are $12 each, and you can purchase them upon arrival. Credit cards will be accepted using the club's new card reader.
First Kaji Scholarship Winners Announced
Congratulations to the recipients of the Philadelphia Rotary Foundation’s Hideko and Akira Kaji Scholarships-- each worth $2,500.00.

She also participated in a National Honor Society project, tutoring at St. Francis de Sales School with 20 hours of volunteer time since the middle of the year. Winta will be attending Temple University in the fall.
Ciara Bassett has been a model student and has demonstrated consistent diligence throughout her four years at Liguori Academy. Ciara is kind, caring, and respectful of all those around her and she has been a part of several Interact Club projects over the years as well. She will soon be attending a prestigious trade school, The Associated Builders and Contractors of Eastern PA, Apprenticeship Program, registered with the U.S. Office of Apprenticeship, and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor.
International Visitors
It was like a mini United Nations Thursday at the Pyramid Club. Attending Thursday's Rotary meeting were guests from Bangladesh, Greece, Italy, the Ivory Coast, and Taiwan. They are shown here with President Ken Myers and Past District Governor Joan Batory.
In addition, our social gathering was enhanced by the presence of some international visitors. In this photo you'll see President Ken welcoming Bernadette Kamara and her husband from the Ivory Coast, along with Samuele Cannas, a doctor at Penn who is originally from Sardinia, Italy.
Honoring a Legacy
Philadelphia Rotary has received some heart-warming messages we want to share with you. After seeing thank you letters from the recipients of the Kaji Scholarships, the children of Akira and Hideko Kaji sent the following to Joe Batory:
Son Ken Kaji, wrote: "I felt a sense of pride when I read the article about the 2023 scholarship awards in the Philadelphia Rotary newsletter. My parents (Hideko and Akira) lived for their research efforts. And so, it is fitting that their societal contributions were cemented by scholarships in their name for two worthy young people."
And their daughter Amy added: "Thank you so much for sending this along to us. This is a tremendous honor to have a Rotary Foundation Scholarship Award in honor of my parents. We are all touched and extremely grateful to you and all of the Philadelphia Rotarians."
Preview of Survey Results
President Ken has asked Carrie Sharpshair to serve as an ad-hoc committee chair for Membership Enrichment. Carrie conducted a survey of our current membership last month to take a pulse check in 4 key areas: Service Events, Speakers, Social Events, and Enrichment. 33% of members responded, with 77% of those being people in club leadership positions. Key highlights of the survey indicated members are looking for:
More social interaction at Club meetings
More effective, local speakers with time for questions
Monthly service events
Improved sign-up process for events
And more!
A deeper analysis of the responses is being done in July, and Carrie will be sharing the response data with members in the coming weeks. The Board is excited to incorporate the feedback into the planning of the upcoming year.
Rotary Pride at Parade
Rotarians are a dedicated bunch. Despite heat and humidity, and then a downpour, Rotary Clubs of District 7450 kept our commitment to march in Philadelphia's Independence Day Parade, part of the Wawa Welcome America celebration. Philadelphia Rotary was well-represented! Attendees included Joe and Joan Batory, Christa Cobb, Lisa Leonard and her boyfriend, Frances Liao and friends, Chris Mapp, President Ken Myers, Walter Pinkas and his mother, Carrie Sharpshair, Maria Alejandra Somarriba. We were also happy to have Iyabosola Solanke with us. She's a Rotary member from Nigeria who brought along her daughter Lola. Special thanks to Meghan Hughes for designing the big vinyl banner we proudly carried along the 1.4 mile parade route.
You can see a video recap of our participation in the parade by watching this YouTube video.

Homecoming Weekend for the Monarchs Rotarians Gather in Support
On Thursday, June 8th, Rotarians attended in full support to an annual gala to help raise money for underprivileged youth to participate in sports. The Monarchs are the Rotary Club of Philadelphia adopted team. The club continues to provide equipment and support for a group of young girls through athletics. Nearly $10,000 was raised to support Monarchs programs this summer. We are proud to be a recognized partner for this great cause.
On Saturday, June 10th, Rotarians attended the Homecoming Monarch Pride ceremony to recognize educational achievements and acknowledge special guests. Rotary members presented equipment for the girls' soccer team.
Team members, their families, and community leaders like City Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson (pictured with Walter Pinkas and Gary Kao) joined in a day-long celebration of the sports programs serving youths in Philadelphia.

School Year Full of Youth Service
By Joseph Batory
As the school year comes to a close, we can be very proud of the youth groups that we sponsor. Here are some highlights of what they accomplished in 2022-2023:
At Liguori Academy, our Philadelphia Rotary sponsored Interact Club under the focused direction of Mary Theresa Killion, has had a very successful 2022-23.
The students did multiple neighborhood cleanups, prepared sandwiches for the St. Francis Inn (a center for the homeless), conducted a clothing drive for those in need, and created supportive/caring cards for the Philly House shelter clients. The Liguori club hosted an on-site visit with Philadelphia Rotary President Rosana Anchondo-Isaack. And, of course, Liguori is also where 18 Rotary members went to give career presentations, each one earning rave reviews from the students.
Our Name in Lights
Philadelphia Rotary is about to “Hit The Lights!”
Joe Batory has received confirmation that his request for a display on the PECO Crown Lights has been accepted. The Philadelphia Rotary Message that he created is tentatively scheduled to be displayed on top of 2301 Market Street on Sunday, 6/18; Sunday, 6/25; and, Sunday, 7/2. Below is the message:
Philadelphia Rotary 100+ years of caring outreach locally and beyond!
The PECO Crown Lights display oversees the City of Philadelphia skyline and will be seen by thousands of Center City drivers and pedestrians. The Philadelphia Rotary message (among others) will run continuously on each designated day from 5:00 PM through the night hours until 9:00 AM the next morning.

This is an incredible acknowledgement for another non-profit organization to honor the work and support provided by our club. On Sunday, May 21st, Executive Director Catherine Charlton recognized our Foundation President Sean Friedland and Club President Rosana Anchondo-Isaack for 7 years of continued support to provide grants that help children obtain needed music equipment and transportation to learn music and dance. This event was well represented by club members. In addition to Sean and Rosana, Joe and Joan Batory, John Schueler, and Ed Isaack all attended the ceremony and dance competition.
Visiting Rotarian Ruth Ndwiga from the Rotary Club of Embu Kenya and President Rosana at Maggiano’s informal meeting
On Thursday May 18th, we had our monthly social event at Maggiano's where we had a special guest. Ruth Ndwiga joined us for a wonderful evening of camaraderie and fun. Ruth is from the Rotary Club of Embu Kenya where she is a social worker who has started orphanages for children with HIV. Showing Support for Music Education
Our club has a long history of supporting Musicopia and Dancing Classrooms Philly, which offer young people and their communities opportunities to be educated, inspired, and have their lives transformed through the arts. 3 Philadelphia Rotarians are involved in the organization and are helping with its spring fundraiser. If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so at any or all of the following links:
Joe Batory's Fundraising Page
Ed Isaack's Fundraising Page
John Schueler's Fundraising Page
Donations will be split as designated by the Musicopia and Dancing Classrooms Philly Board of Directors.
Our club’s latest career presenters at Liguori Academy were Jameel Worthy (pictured) and Rolf Willers. Each of these Philadelphia Rotary members was well received by the students and generated many positive responses.
This service project has become one of the best ever and one of the most significant by Philadelphia Rotarians! Just in 2022-2023, we have had 17 career presentations by Philadelphia Rotarians at Liguori with four more yet to come.
“What continues to amaze me,” summarized our club’s youth services chairperson Joe Batory, “is that despite so many different careers and personalities among our speakers is that each and every presenter has received rave reviews from the many different student groups.”
